After two months of falling behind the Xbox One for U.S. sales, Sony’s PlayStation 4 came out on top for January.

According to the NPD Group’s statistics for last month, the PS4 led overall hardware sales, followed by the Xbox One. NPD did not reveal specific numbers.

Sony, too, does not report sales numbers. But PlayStation Marketing Senior Vice President Guy Longworth told video game reporter Geoff Keighley that the PS4 finished January with nearly double the sales of the Xbox One:

We’ve reached out to Sony to see if the company has any information on PS4 sales for January and will update if we hear back.

xboxoneMicrosoft posted its Xbox One sales numbers for both November and December, but interestingly left that information out in today’s blog post about its console’s performance in the U.S.

Microsoft did note today that it sold 2.27 million Xbox 360 and Xbox One games in January for 47 percent of software market share, but did not include many more stats other than “740 million hours of fun,” and “685 speech commands used to navigate Xbox One.”

In December, the Xbox One sold 908,000 units in the U.S., ousting Sony’s PS4, which sold somewhere between 643,000 and 908,000 units.

In January, Microsoft said it sold 3 million Xbox One’s around the world, while Sony announced that it had sold 4.2 million PS4′s worldwide. Sony is selling its console in 52 countries, while Microsoft has stuck with its initial 13 launch markets.

The NPD also reported that video game hardware sales were up 17-percent from last January thanks to the next-generation consoles. However, software sales were down 25 percent, though the NPD does not account for digital purchases.
