Steven VanRoekel, the former Microsoft executive who has led IT for the federal government as the U.S. Chief Information Officer for the past three years, will be leaving the post to help coordinate the administration’s response to the Ebola virus outbreak in Western Africa.

The news was announced earlier today, as reported by Politico. He will be working as a senior adviser to Rajiv Shah, administrator for United States Agency for International Development (USAID).

VanRoekel is one of the speakers at the upcoming GeekWire Summit, and the Oct. 2 event in Seattle is likely to be his last public appearance in his role as CIO, before joining USAID the following week. We’re looking forward to having him, and we’ll have even more to talk about given his new role.

“Technology is not the solution to this extremely difficult task but it will be a part of the solution and I look forward to partnering with our Federal agencies, non-profit organizations and private sector tech communities to help accelerate this effort,”VanRoekel said in a statement.
