Tesla has announced that a newer, improved version of its Roadster electric car is on its way for 2015.

In a blog post, they explain the upgrades: improved battery with up to 31 percent more energy than the original 2008 Roadster cell; a 15 percent improvement on drag; and a 20 percent improvement on “rolling resistance,” or what makes your tires super efficient.

Vroom. Vroom.

In summary, Tesla states:

Combining all of these improvements we can achieve a predicted 40-50 percent improvement on range between the original Roadster and Roadster 3.0. There is a set of speeds and driving conditions where we can confidently drive the Roadster 3.0 over 400 miles. We will be demonstrating this in the real world during a non-stop drive from San Francisco to Los Angeles in the early weeks of 2015.

Tesla will be taking appointments for the new Roadster once the battery pack finishes its safety validation. Keep in mind that the pictures included in this post are of the 2012 models from their website — they haven’t revealed the new design yet either.

As Gigaom reports, this isn’t the first upgraded Roadster. They took the 2010 version for test drive. Watch their video below:
