In a move that bucks what a lot of other tech luminaries are saying, former Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer put out a tweet today calling on the Federal Communications Commission to take it easy when it comes to regulating the Internet.

Ballmer said that he disagreed with people who claim that the FCC needs to provide greater oversight, and that the current competitive landscape is “working well.” While it’s not clear exactly who he’s disagreeing with, odds are his comments are directed at President Obama’s net neutrality proposal.

That proposal, outlined yesterday, calls upon the FCC to use its authority and re-classify internet providers as common carriers under Title II of the Telecommunications Act in order to enforce certain principles. Those include a prohibition on blocking and throttling content, key issues in the net neutrality debate. Obama’s proposal has come under fire from a number of telecommunications firms, and now, apparently, Ballmer.

It’s an interesting position for the tech-exec-turned-basketball-team-owner to take, especially since Microsoft signed onto a letter from more than 100 tech companies that called on the FCC to strengthen net neutrality rules.
