LAS VEGAS — Sony has sold 4.2 million PlayStation 4 consoles as of Dec. 28, the company just announced here during its opening CES Keynote.
That compares to the 3 million Xbox One units that Microsoft says it sold as of the end of 2013. Sony’s console launched a week earlier than Microsoft’s new machine.
Andrew House, the CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment (above), also announced a new streaming game service, PlayStation Now, for playing games on a variety of devices, including smartphones. A closed beta is slated for January in the U.S., with a full rollout this summer, he said.
More news: The company plans to launch a new cloud-based TV service, Sony Entertainment Network. And it showed a new in-home projection system that’s part of what it calls the “Life Space UX” approach — displaying content inside a home that can change throughout the day.
