Matt Ehrlichman wants to create the next major tech company in the Seattle region, and his company, Porch, is on its way — going from 25 employees to 125 employees in just the last six months, following the launch of its data-intensive home-improvement site.

Despite raising millions in funding from a roster of well-known investors, the company’s new headquarters on Eastlake Avenue in Seattle has the feel of a scrappy startup, furnished with a combination of second-hand finds and do-it-yourself projects — such as porch swings hanging from the ceiling next to the engineering staff, and an antique workbench in the middle of the space.

And yes, the lobby is an indoor porch.

The idea behind Porch is to use data to help people make better home-improvement decisions. The company has compiled large amounts of data — including details on cost — on home improvement projects across the country.  Porch offers its service for free to homeowners, charging remodelers and other home-improvement professionals for market insights and promotional exposure in specific geographies.

Porch WallPorch’s recent growth has been fueled in part by a partnership with home-improvement giant Lowes.

The company is holding an open house at its new space today, including a visit by Seattle Mayor Ed Murray. In advance of the event, GeekWire got a tour of the building this week, with Ehrlichman serving as our guide. (Local trivia: The building that houses the Porch HQ also has a historical connection to the Seattle tech community as the former headquarters of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.)
