Seattle’s Cinerama, the classic movie theater owned by Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen, is being super-secretive about what’s in store for movie-goers when it reopens this month after a two-month renovation. But if the outside of the building is any indication, it’s going to be very different.

The plain exterior of the building, at 4th Avenue and Lenora Street, has been replaced with the vivid mural above, depicting scenes from classic sci-fi movies.

The theater is set to reopen on Nov. 20, starting with The Hunger Games: Mockingjay — Part I. One change already is reserved seating, letting people choose their seats when they buy tickets in advance. The rest of the changes are under wraps, but the Cinerama previously announced plans to install one of the world’s first commercial 4K laser projectors.

We’ll have a sneak peek of the remodel on GeekWire advance of the reopening. In the meantime, we are having a fun debate over the new exterior. It’s certainly attention-grabbing, and while it won’t be as controversial as Allen’s Frank Gehry-designed EMP Museum, members of GeekWire staff are divided over the mural, with opinions ranging from “bold” to “blight.” What do you think?
