Amazon.com CEO Jeff Bezos suffered a kidney stone on New Year’s Day while vacationing in the Galapagos Islands and was rescued by the Ecuadorian Navy.

Galapagos Digital cited two Ecuadorian news websites, which reported that a Ecuadorian Navy helicopter airlifted Bezos from a cruise ship in Santa Cruz Island’s Academy Bay to his private jet on Baltra Island. The Amazon founder then flew to the U.S. for emergency treatment.

We reached out to Amazon, and here’s what a company spokesperson told us:

I sent Jeff your note and here’s what he sent back: “Galapagos: five stars. Kidney stones: zero stars.”

Well, at least the rest of his vacation went well.

Having had two kidney stones, I can sympathize with Bezos. This is an exclusive club you don’t want to be a member of! It’s actually a bit surprising he could make it all the way back to the States.

Best part: when you start the year like that, it’s all uphill.

I’m really hoping you mean “downhill.”

Hmm… that’s an awkward phrasing. I meant, it’s all getting better, hence up. Uphill to the summit of Mt. Everest is a good thing :)

        Since I can’t edit:

Best part: when you start the year like that, it only gets better.

I’ve had over 15 kidney stones. The trick I’ve learned, so they don’t interrupt vacations and other special moments, is to always carry 10mg Toradol and 50mg Tramadol pills with me. These two medications have saved me from a world of pain many times.
