Isis, the digital wallet venture started by Verizon, T-Mobile and AT&T, says it will roll out a new brand — aiming to avoid confusion with the militant group the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, commonly known as ISIS.

“However coincidental, we have no interest in sharing a name with a group whose name has become synonymous with violence and our hearts go out to those who are suffering. As a company, we have made the decision to rebrand,” says Michael Abbott, CEO of the digital wallet venture, in a post today announcing the news.

“Changing a brand is never easy, but we know this is the right decision – for our company, our partners and our customers,” Abbott writes, adding, “We are actively working on a new brand, and I’ll share more with you as our journey progresses in the coming months.”

The Isis Mobile Wallet app works on Android and iPhone, leveraging Near Field Communication technology to let users make payments wirelessly at supported checkout registers.
