Update (2:21 p.m.): Instagram is back online after a brief outage that lasted about a half hour this afternoon. The company still has not disclosed the cause of the problems, though users should be able to view and post images as normal. Our article about the outage follows below.

So much for mid-afternoon Friday selfies: Instagram is down. Visiting the company’s website returns an internal server error, and the Instagram app won’t upload images. In a post on Twitter, the company said that it’s aware of the problem and is working on a fix.

The cause of the outage, which seems to have started around 1:50 p.m. today, is not yet known. Hopefully, things will be back online in time for people to post whatever fancy-pants cocktails they’re drinking after work today.

We’ve reached out to Instagram seeking more information about the outage, and will update this post when we hear back.
