Amazon will launch its bid to upend the smartphone market from the Center of the Universe.

DSC09090Seattle’s Fremont neighborhood, known by that name, will play host to Jeff Bezos & Co. and media from around the world today for the unveiling of the company’s mystery device, widely expected to be a phone.

This morning,  section of Seattle’s N. 35th St. has been closed down for the event, and Amazon banners have been unfurled as caterers and technical crew roll in the last pieces of equipment into the venue. TV crews are already broadcasting live from across the street, hours before the event is set to begin.

We’ve traveled thousands of miles to cover these types of events over the years, so it’s fun to see something like this come to our neighborhood, literally. GeekWire happens to be based a block away from the event.

I’ll be making the walk over in just a bit to cover the unveiling, joined by my colleague Tricia Duryee.

Stay tuned to GeekWire later this morning for our live blog and more coverage of Amazon’s device, whatever it turns out to be. In the meantime, here are a few more pictures from the scene.
