Utah has a bunch of nerds, while Washington D.C. lacks any geek pride.

Those are a few data points from a study of the “Nerdiest States in America,” by Seattle online real estate startup Estately.

To determine which state has the most geeks, Estately looked at Facebook data to see what percentage of users from each state listed interests like Star Trek or Anime Movies.

The startup then took that data, ranked the states based on 12 geeky categories and came up with an overall average.

Utah took the top spot, beating out all other states for interest in cosplay, Harry Potter, Star Wars, LARPing, fantasy literature, and Lord of the Rings.

Washington finished sixth thanks to a serious passion for Lord of the Rings. Oregon was just behind in eighth, and ranked first in the nation for Star Trek interest. Meanwhile, Washington D.C. was at the bottom of the list — guess politics and geeks don’t really co-exist.

Here’s how the top 10 rounded out:

  1. Utah
  2. Alaska
  3. Wyoming
  4. Idaho
  5. Colorado
  6. Washington
  7. Kentucky
  8. Oregon
  9. New Mexico
  10. West Virginia

Estately was founded in 2006 by Douglas Cole and Galen Ward and helps consumers find a home. It has raised just over $1 million from Founder’s Co-op, 500 Startups and others.
