That settles it — I want an Oculus Dev Kit 2 for Christmas.

haloOne of the best parts of the annual PAX Prime game convention, for those of us fortunate enough to have press credentials, is the media preview on the first morning — a precious hour to visit as many booths and demo as many games as possible before thousands of fans descend upon the show.

My five-minutes of hands-on time with the Oculus Rift Development Kit 2, playing Lucky’s Tale, was the clear highlight for me this morning. If you’re attending PAX this weekend in Seattle and haven’t had a chance to experience immersive virtual reality gaming, it’s worth the inevitably long wait in line to try it out.

I’ve tried virtual reality demos before, but the ability to play a truly immersive game, moving your head around to look at different aspects of the scene, is an experience that lives up to the hype.

Other highlights included Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and the Nintendo 3DS, both of which are playable at the Nintendo booth this weekend in advance of their public release. Xbox is offering hands-on time with its upcoming compilation, “Halo: The Master Chief Collection,” and Sony is showing a slew of unreleased titles for the PlayStation 4 including Little Big Planet 3 and Bloodborne.

We’ll have more from PAX throughout the holiday weekend, and if you were lucky enough to get a pass to the sold-out show, be sure to check out GeekWire contributor Tim Ellis’ post with tips on surviving the event.
