twitterHave you ever wanted a way to tell someone on Twitter to stop tweeting so much about something that really annoys you?

Well, now you can.

Twitter today introduced a new mute feature that lets you silence those people that are tweeting too much about Justin Bieber, or something similar that is clogging up your tweet stream.

If you mute an account, that user won’t know that you muted them — in other words, you can tell someone to shut up on Twitter without having to tell them. However, said user will still be able to reply, retweet and favorite your tweets.

If you want to see their tweets again, you can simply un-mute the account. As of now, there don’t appear to be custom time-sensitive options — muting someone for a specified amount of time, for example.

Third-party Twitter apps like TweetDeck and HootSuite have long offered a mute future, but this is the first time Twitter has unveiled something official.

Twitter will roll out the mute option to all users in the coming weeks. Here’s how it will work:

To mute a user from a Tweet on your iOS or Android device or on Twitter for web tap more and then mute @username. To mute someone from their profile page, tap the gear icon on the page and choose mute @username.
