destinylaunch1So far, Destiny is living up to the hype.

Bungie’s much-anticipated game made more than $500 million on Tuesday, marking the biggest new video game franchise launch in history, publisher Activision announced today.

While that $500 million number only reflects how many copies Acitivision has sold to retailers — not actually how many customers bought the game — it’s still an indication that Destiny is on pace for immense success.

Analysts from Wedbush noted that about 10 million units have been shipped, which “far exceeds our bullish expectations.”

“Destiny appears well-positioned to become Activision Publishing’s third billion-dollar franchise,” Webbush noted.

Tuesday at midnight marked the official debut of the game developed by Bellevue-based Bungie that’s already being hailed as one of 2014’s best titles. Destiny is Bungie’s first non-Halo game since it spun off from Microsoft in 2007, and the first-person shooter launches today on the PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, Xbox One, and Xbox 360. It was the most pre-ordered new IP in video game history.
