LAS VEGAS — Asus is bringing its Padfone line of smartphone/tablets to the U.S. through AT&T, announcing a phone called the Padfone X that docks into the back of a tablet. The device, running Android 4.4 Kitkat, was announced by Asus CEO Jerry Shen on stage this morning at an AT&T developer event at CES in Las Vegas.

IThe 5-inch smartphone docks into the back of a 9-inch tablet, providing access to apps and online services via the phone, but on the larger screen. Incoming calls then show up first on the tablet, allowing the user to undock the device to take the call.

AT&T says the phone will feature high-definition calling, part of a broader rollout of that capability on its network. Specific pricing and availability weren’t announced.
