It’s becoming a holiday tradition for Apple: Ads designed to pull at viewers’ heartstrings. If you can make it through the new one without tearing up, you win a prize.

Screen Shot 2014-12-15 at 9.51.08 AMCalled “The Song,” it’s all about a young woman who turns a record of a song that her grandmother recorded for her late grandfather into a duet – with the help of Apple’s products, of course.

The appearance of a MacBook seems largely incidental to the core of the ad, which is interesting, to say the least. In that way, it’s unlike last year’s “Misunderstood,” which focused on a boy who was seemingly immersed in an iPhone only to reveal that he had secretly recorded a video of his family’s festivities. That ad won an Emmy in the Outstanding Commercial category. It’ll be interesting to see what comes of this year’s offering.

Apple isn’t the only tech company with a new holiday ad this weekend – Amazon launched a zany new spot yesterday for the Fire TV Stick featuring Gary Busey.
