Apple-App-Store.pngApple announced today that sales from its iOS App store topped $10 billion last year, with consumers spending $1 billion on apps in December alone. That made 2013 Apple’s most successful year ever since its launch of the App Store in July of 2008, and it positions the company as the undisputed leader in mobile as it continues to face off against the likes of Amazon, Google and Microsoft.

As Macworld pointed out, the new sales figures are particularly interesting, given that the App Store only brought in $3.6 billion in its first two years of operation.

“We’d like to thank our customers for making 2013 the best year ever for the App Store,” Eddy Cue, Apple’s Senior Vice President of Internet Software and Services. “The lineup of apps for the holiday season was astonishing and we look forward to seeing what developers create in 2014.”

It’s great news for developers who are working within the company’s ecosystem, which, as of Q3 last year, still paid out more to developers than the Google Play Store, despite Android’s dominance in terms of market share, according to a report by App Annie.

Part of why Apple is so thankful is that it’s getting a third of all the revenue from its digital storefront, or somewhere in the neighborhood of $3 billion.
