Apple just announced that it sold a record 4 million pre-orders for the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus in the first 24 hours of availability. The company promises a “significant amount” of the devices will also be delivered to customers starting this Friday, but cautioned that “many iPhone pre-orders are scheduled to be delivered in October.”
In other words, if you want an iPhone 6 or iPhone 6 Plus starting on launch day, get in line, literally. The devices go on sales in stores this Friday, Sept. 19.
The iPhone 6 sports a 4.7-inch screen, while the 6 Plus features a massive 5.5-inch display, moving it into the realm of “phablet,” although the company isn’t using that prase. Apple is calling both “Retina HD” displays to differentiate them from the comparatively smaller 4-inch display on the iPhone 5S and 5C. Both phones come pre-loaded with iOS 8, the newest major release of Apple’s mobile operating system.
The iPhone 6 and 6 Plus will be available for pre-order on Friday, and will go on sale on September 19. The iPhone 6 will cost $199 for a 16 GB model on a standard two-year contract, with 64 GB model that costs $299, and a 128 GB model that costs $399. A 16 GB 6 Plus will cost $299, with 64 and 128 GB models costing $399 and $499, respectively.
Here’s the statement from the company.
