Your basic, run-of-the-mill Apple Genius will just not do for this. Apple is hiring a more fashion-forward staff to work the launch of the new watch, forevermore trying to sell the idea of wearable tech as “stylish.”
Convincing everyday consumers that geek gear can be stylish has proven a challenge. Google already realized this when they tapped fashion icon Diana von Furstenberg for DVF | Made for Glass. The partnership didn’t do much for Google Glass or DVF by the way.
Now, as Mashable reports, Apple will hire “new fashion-focused staff for its brick and mortar stores” with luxury or fashion backgrounds.
The luxury angle is pretty right on, considering the gold version is rumored to cost around $5,000. Apple’s PR machine has already placed it on the cover of Vogue China and “Apple’s design chief Jony Ive traveled to Paris to give famed fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld a closer look at the gadget.”
The Apple watch, which will start at $349, is due out next spring.
