alphaAmazon Studios announced today that its political comedy show Alpha House will be back for a second season, in addition to six new original programs coming to Amazon Prime Instant Video.

Alpha House, directed by Garry Trudeau and starring John Goodman, will return for another season after the political comedy show’s inaugural stint was “the most popular TV season on Amazon Instant Video.”

Six new Amazon showsThe After, BoschGortimer Gibbon’s Life on Normal Street, Mozart in the JungleTransparent and Wishenpoof — were also approved for full season production after the public voted on pilot episodes. The new batch includes a thriller, a comedy-drama and two children’s shows.

You’ll need a $99/year Amazon Prime subscription to watch Amazon’s shows through Prime Instant Video, which competes with Netflix — a company that also has its own original content.

Today’s news comes just days before Amazon is set to announce what’s expected to be a streaming box meant for the living room at an event in New York City. Amazon is also reportedly planning a free streaming video service that’s supported by ads and doesn’t require an annual Prime membership.
