It’s a big day for Netflix, with the release of “House of Cards” Season 2 giving customers of the streaming service an alternative to the traditional Valentine’s Day date night — and in many cases a welcome alternative to Valentine’s Day altogether.

As with the first season, the company is releasing the entire second season all at once, feeding into binge-viewing tendencies and prompting some warnings from high places.

So Amazon has a Rorschach test for your relationship: Will you and your significant other spend the evening watching Kevin Spacey’s Frank Underwood in House of Cards, or Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice?

prideThe Seattle company this morning announced that it has added the BBC mini-series to its Prime Instant Video service, available as part of the $79/year (for now) Amazon Prime subscription. The company says it’s the first time the mini-series, starring Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle, has been available as part of a standalone subscription video service.

No, it won’t get the same attention as a new season of House of Cards. Amazon is working on its own second batch of original series and gave Amazon Prime binge-viewers their own smorgasbord last weekend with a new collection of pilots to consider.

But the twist here is that Netflix runs on Amazon Web Services, so Amazon wins either way — as long as its servers can keep House of Cards from tumbling down.
