Amazon Studios has picked up a pair of Golden Globe nominations for the first time since the company embarked on its quest to produce original video content for its Amazon Prime Instant Video service.

Transparent,” the new dramatic comedy created by Jill Soloway, is in the running for Best Comedic Television Series, and lead actor Jeffrey Tambor is among those nominated for Best Actor in a Comedy Series. The show has been the subject of critical acclaim since it launched earlier this year.

Netflix is still the front-runner in terms of award nominations, though: Amazon’s main competitor in the streaming video space picked up six nominations, three each for “House of Cards” and “Orange is the New Black.” The two companies will square off directly in the best comedy category, alongside “Girls,” “Jane the Virgin” and “Silicon Valley.”

These nominations could also be a harbinger of things to come during the Primetime Emmy Awards next year. Picking up recognition there would definitely boost Amazon’s profile at a time when the company is putting a lot of effort into expanding its catalog and attracting new viewers to its service.

Update: Amazon Studios Head Roy Price had this to say about the nominations in a statement provided to GeekWire via email: “We’re delighted at the recognition for the great work of Jill Soloway, Jeffrey Tambor and the whole Transparent team and we look forward to releasing season two of Transparent in 2015.”
