airbnb22Another day, another tech company setting up shop in the Northwest.

Airbnb today announced plans to open up their North American operational headquarters in downtown Portland, with room for up to 160 employees.

“Portland welcomes and promotes innovation and is a leader in the sharing economy, so we couldn’t think of a better fit for our newest space,” the company wrote today.

Airbnb’s new Portland outpost, located in the Blagen Block building, will house employees working in customer experience, management, training, IT, and facilities groups. The Bay Area company, which lets people rent out rooms in their homes, notes that the 27,000 square-foot office will also “be a space for the greater Portland community to share.”

Airbnb is trying to work something out with city leaders and the company said its decision to open an office in the Rose City is unrelated.

Airbnb is the latest company to set up an office in the Northwest. On Thursday, eBay announced plans to expand its office in Portland. Other tech companies like Salesforce, New Relic, Kixeye and Cozy all have operations in the region as well.

“This project bolsters an already strong and growing cluster of software firms and technology talent in Portland,” Patrick Quinton, Portland Development Commission executive director, said in a statement. “We’re especially pleased to welcome Airbnb to the Oldtown neighborhood and its emerging entrepreneurial scene.”

The same pattern is evident up north in Seattle, where companies like eBay, FacebookTwitterGoogle, eBay, Hulu and Salesforce.com, all have engineering offices in the area.

Most recently, Twitter opened the company’s first organically-grown engineering office in downtown Seattle after first coming to the city four years prior. Google, meanwhile, has plans to double the size of its campus in Kirkland, a suburb 20 minutes east of Seattle.
