Twitter is bringing aboard one of the key players from Microsoft’s developer evangelist group, who worked for years to encourage and pave the way for third-party developers to build applications and services for Windows and other Microsoft platforms.

Jeff Sandquist, Microsoft’s senior director of developer relations and one of the founders of the company’s Channel 9 developer community, announced on Twitter a short time ago that he will be joining the social network as director of platform partnerships.

Sandquist’s departure comes as Microsoft pushes to get more developers on board building apps for Windows 8 and Windows Phone, trying to catch up to iOS and Android by landing missing apps for the Microsoft platforms.

Sandquist noted on Twitter that he will be moving to San Francisco for the job. We’ve contacted Twitter for additional information on Sandquist’s role, and what it says about Twitter’s ambitions for its developer platform.
