—Dan Shapiro, the co-founder of Ontela and Sparkbuy, is taking a leave of absence from Google to write a book about startup CEOs for O’Reilly Publishing. He also says that he’s working on another “non-software product,” but declined to offer more details about that.
“So the fantastic folks at Google have agreed to let me take a leave of absence for a few months to scratch some of these itches,” Shapiro writes in a blog post. “It’s going to be a great summer.” Shapiro sold Sparkbuy to Google two years ago, and since then he’s worked as CEO of Google Comparison.
—The Institute for Systems Biology has named Seattle real estate executive Dave Sabey as chairman. “ISB is thrilled that Dave has accepted the position as chair of our board of directors,” said Dr. Lee Hood, president of ISB. “He appreciates the contemporary challenges and opportunities for nonprofits and his operational expertise on a global scale can help guide us in the difficult financial times research organizations face. Dave is one of those rare individuals who is a superb doer.”
—Add3, the Seattle search engine marketing firm, has named Dan Sundgren to the position of chief evangelist. The 25-person company, which is profitable and on track to top $10 million in revenue this year, also announced that it is doubling the size of its Capitol Hill headquarters with room for as many as 50 employees. A graduate of Washington State University and advisory board member at the Northwest Internet Advertising Group, Sundgren previously worked at Intelius and Google. Add3 is “uniquely suited to provide best-of-breed search marketing services to a growing base of clients here in the Pacific Northwest and beyond,” said Sundgren.
—Rob Arnold has been named CEO of MetaJure, a Seattle company that helps individuals sift through information in legal documents. Arnold fills the shoes of interim CEO Paula Rosput Reynolds, who has been elected to the board of directors. Arnold most recently served as CEO of Geospiza, which sold to Perkin Elmer in May 2011. Before that, he led Crossport Systems and co-founded ST Labs, which sold to Data Dimensions.
