In response to Sony’s announcement that it has sold 2.1 million units of its new PlayStation 4 so far, Microsoft announced … how many billions of zombies Xbox One owners have killed.
While it’s cool to see that gamers are making big things happen with Microsoft’s new console, the new numbers released by Microsoft don’t really provide anything close to an apples-to-apples comparison of what’s actually going on.
The company was perfectly happy to announce that it had sold a million consoles on launch day, but now that the Xbox One is 11 days into its time on the market, Microsoft has clammed up. Still, while it isn’t releasing any sales numbers, Microsoft says that demand for the Xbox One is incredibly high.
“Eleven days in we are seeing record breaking sales and are selling every Xbox One we can make. Demand is far exceeding supply in the 13 countries we’ve launched and we are sold out at retailers around the world. We are seeing incredible usage from our engaged fans who have purchased Xbox One with more than 50 million hours spent on Xbox One games and entertainment,” Yusuf Mehdi, Microsoft’s Corporate Vice President of Strategy and Marketing for Xbox said in the announcement.
It’s possible that Sony has had an edge over Microsoft because of the PS4’s earlier release date, but Microsoft released its console on the same day in 13 countries, while Sony has been gradually rolling out its box. Still, today’s disclosure from Sony is going to put pressure on Microsoft to start talking about real numbers, real soon.
