If you thought you might be putting an Amazon set-top box on your holiday gift list, new rumors might put that to rest.
Citing unnamed sources familiar with the matter, The Verge reported today that the rumored set-top box, supposedly code-named “Cinnamon” has been delayed until next year, following rumors that it would be available this holiday season.
Bloomberg BusinessWeek first reported on the box in April, and the Wall Street Journal doubled down on those rumors earlier this month. Now, it seems that the device has met with internal delays, which seems to be a common thread among projects at Amazon’s secretive, Cupertino-based Lab126 hardware development division.
Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos told GeekWire that he “wouldn’t want to speculate” on the company’s plans for the living room in an interview last month. Amazon’s entry into the set-top box market (potentially competing against the likes of Roku and Apple) would be a significant move, and one that could help the company’s Amazon Prime streaming service.
Amazon has filed for a trademark on the phrase “FireTube,” which may be the name of the device, if it ever sees the light of day.
