I’ve had a tough time getting into the show Portlandia, with aspects of it making me feel, well, a bit uncomfortable. I enjoyed the show’s opening Dream of the 90s video. But since then, I think the Portlandia has been more miss than hit. Now, here comes a mock public service announcement from the show that got me to chuckle a bit.

Featuring “actual nerd” Brian P., it takes a swipe at all of those hipsters who think being a nerd is so cool.

“I am not wearing a nerd costume for Halloween …. This is how I actually dress,” notes Brian, adding that he’s not skinny enough to fit into hip jeans and wears glasses so he can actually see.

“A real nerd is ashamed to be called a nerd,” says Brian. “So, please, get real, if you are not a nerd, don’t call yourself one.”

I thought this was a pretty big ‘miss’ (though I do generally enjoy & watch Portlandia), mainly because of the perpetuation of the “fake geek girl” meme that seems not to die. I thought it unfortunately reinforced that with the lack of any women in the “real” nerd category or men as “fake” nerds. I guess I’d hoped for more.

I don’t know about the sketch being a miss but more of a mean spirited jab for no other reason other than they could. Don’t get me wrong, I love Portlandia but this just comes off as a cheap clip in the knees.

Perhaps it’s time for “nerds” to realize that the words “geek” and “nerd” have been redefined over the last decade. Yes, you’re a nerd. You’re also socially inept. The two are not mutually exclusive.

so have the words faggot, or nigger been redefined over the last decade while I wasn’t paying any attention?
