Paul Allen has created a new position of executive technology advisor, to work with him across all of his personal and professional projects, and filled the job by hiring Parag Garg, an Amazon product architect who had been playing a key role on multiple unannounced products under development by the Seattle company.

GeekWire heard rumblings of the move today and confirmed the news with Garg via phone. He said he started working with the Microsoft co-founder last week, after nearly three years at Amazon. He noted that he enjoyed his time at Amazon, left on good terms and would recommend the company to anyone.

Garg acknowledged that it was difficult to exit before seeing the products he was working on at Amazon come to market, but said he couldn’t pass up the opportunity to take the job with Allen.

“I wasn’t happy to leave, but Paul Allen doesn’t hire a tech advisor every day,” Garg said.

Before going to Amazon, Garg worked at Microsoft, on projects including the Xbox One, the unreleased Courier tablet and Windows Embedded. In his new role, Garg will advise Allen on technology issues across his varied collection of interests and projects, including his technology investments, sports teams, museums, and more.

And no, for the record, Garg didn’t spill the beans on any of the secret stuff he was working on at Amazon.
