Nintendo today posted its quarterly earnings report and it’s still not looking good for the Japanese game giant.
The company posted a quarterly loss of $81 million in the three months ending Sept. 30. Nintendo turned a profit of $88 million for the the three months prior to that (April-to-June), but it wasn’t the case this time.
Wii U sales continue to struggle, with Nintendo selling just 300,000 units in the past three months. That’s actually up from 160,000 in the previous three months. Still, the 460,000 units sold in the past six months is a far cry from company’s goal of nine million units sold by March 2014.
Nintendo dropped the price of the Wii U by $50 in September.
“The ‘Wii U’ hardware still has a negative impact on Nintendo’s profits, owning mainly to its markdown in the United States and Europe …,” Nintendo wrote.
The original Wii, meanwhile, sold 260,000 units. Nintendo recently announced that it is stopping production of that console. The 3DS fared a little better, as Nintendo sold 2.49 million units in the past quarter, up from 1.4 million in the three months prior.
Nintendo still forecasts the nine million mark for Wii U sales, despite the arrival of the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One next month.
