I’m 23, single, and ready to freakin’ mingle. That’s why I’m excited — and a tad bit nervous — to go on a six-person triple blind date tonight set up by a new online matchmaking company called Grouper.
What exactly is Grouper, you ask? No, we’re not talking about those fish with big-ass mouths (though it is the company logo).
Grouper is a new way for young peeps like me to meet each other for the first time at a prearranged spot. As Grouper puts it, “it’s like going to the bar. But way better.”
Here’s how it works: You grab two of your buds (preferably good wingmen or wingwomen), submit some information to Grouper and the NYC-based company matches you up with three likeminded folk. It costs $20 each, which covers the first round of drinks, and Grouper takes care of scheduling the date and location.
Whatever happens after that, well, is totally up to you and your new friends. Based on some Grouper photos — a.k.a. “Groupergrams” — it looks entertaining at the very least.
We will find out tonight if this is really like going to the bar, “but way better.” I’ve heard a couple different Grouper stories — one friend (in my group tonight) already has a follow-up date born out of a Grouper meetup. Three girls I know also tried it out, but I’m pretty sure they only participated to have drinks bought for them all night.
I’m really interested to see what happens tonight. This is actually my first blind date, and I am admittedly a little nervous going in. But the fact that Grouper sets up a group-date type of deal should ease any awkwardness or tension.
Maybe I’ll meet my future wife. Maybe I’ll walk away with a phone number. Or maybe it will be a complete failure.
