Microsoft will launch its first original series for the Xbox in the first half of 2014, a top executive with the company told an audience entertainment industry leaders in Los Angeles this week. The content will be available for both Xbox One and Xbox 360 via Xbox Live.

Nancy Tellem, who has been leading the development effort as Microsoft’s entertainment and digital president, discussed the plan with Hollywood industry insiders this week during a Variety event in Los Angeles, as reported by the magazine.

“We’re hoping we will be able to put something up in the first quarter, at minimum second quarter,” she said, describing herself as “incredibly ambitious and impatient” about the initiative. Tellem was previously the CBS Television Studios president.

Microsoft will join Netflix, Amazon and Hulu in producing its own content, but Tellem described the Redmond company as a “different animal.” Microsoft has a deal with Steven Spielberg to produce a series based on the Halo franchise, but the report didn’t say which Microsoft series would be released first.
