Microsoft offered a temporary promotion for its Surface Pro tablet earlier this month that was set to end Thursday, but now it looks like the new price point will be permanent.
Trying to recover from lackluster sales of its Surface tablets, Microsoft cut the price of the Surface Pro by $100 in the U.S. and several other countries around the world on Aug. 4.
The promo was supposed to end today, but as Neowin reports, the deal is now here for good. Microsoft’s Surface website reflects this.
That means the prices will remain at $799 for the 64 GB Surface Pro, which previously sold for $899, while the 128GB model will also remain discounted by $100 at $899.
However, if you want to nab a 64GB Surface Pro today, that will be difficult as it’s currently listed as out of stock.
This all follows an earlier $150 price drop for the Surface RT, which resulted in a $900 million charge against the company’s earnings last quarter. Microsoft is expected to come out with new models of the Surface tablets later this year, and it needs to clear inventory in advance.
Microsoft is also heavily discounting the Surface RT for schools and gave away 10,000 tablets to teachers that attended the International Society for Technology in Education last month. In addition, the company recently debuted a new point system via Bing Rewards that awards free Surface RT tablets to schools in exchange for using its search engine.
Unlike the ARM-based Surface RT, the Surface Pro runs on Intel processors and supports legacy Windows applications.
