is rolling out deeper discounts for its Subscribe & Save service, offering anyone who subscribes to five products during a month a 15 percent discount.

The move aims to boost usage of the program and reward heavy users. Subscribe & Save normally offers more modest discounts to subscribers based on their subscriptions to individual products.

As part of the new bulk discount, customers can set five or more items that they’d want delivered on a monthly basis. Amazon says in an announcement that the 15 percent discount will apply to the “entire monthly delivery when you have 5 or more subscriptions delivered in the same month.”

Items included in the program include staples such as laundry supplies, beauty supplies, vitamins and baby care products.  Free shipping applies to Subscribe & Save items. The service doesn’t require a subscription fee.

Post updated to clarify the new elements of the program.

Either GeekWire is really late or Amazon delayed their press release. I’ve been using Subscribe & Save for about 2 years now!

That was my bad. I changed the headline to reflect that the news is around the 15% discounts. May be taking a bit to re-populate.

In the Mobile era, “subscriptions” look a bit outdated. Amazon should be focusing on putting these items “one thumb away” from their customers, without the constraints of subscriptions and using “rewards” to provide discount for regular buyers.

These days, Amazon seem be leaving many doors open to disrupt its business model (Mobile, Physical Retail…). I am surprised companies like Walmart are not following through.
