yakit1The folks over at Seattle-based Freak’n Genius certainly know how to make us laugh, and their newest app is no exception.

The latest LOL-inducing program is called YAKiT, a mobile app that lets you manipulate the mouths of your family, friends, cats, dogs and really, just about anything. It’s essentially just like JibJab, but with added messaging and social sharing capabilities.

The iOS app is fairly simple: You take a photo, pick one from your gallery or find one on the Internet. Next, a circle with white dots will appear and you can easily highlight the mouth. Then, the user records a message and has the option of adjusting the pitch of the audio to, for example, make your best friend sound like chipmunk or give a manly voice to a beautiful model.

You can then share the newly-minted video by text messaging, Email, Twitter or Facebook. Freak’n Genius actually used the technology in a Google Glass parody produced earlier this year.

freakngeniuslogo1Freak’n Genius, led by CEO Kyle Kesterson and formed during Startup Weekend in 2011, was one of eleven companies that participated in the 2012 Kinect Accelerator program, run by Microsoft in partnership with the TechStars program.

The startup, which raised a $525,000 angel round last October, originally used Microsoft’s Kinect to let people crawl into the virtual skin of a variety of animated characters and then create short comedic videos that could be shared over the Web.

Now, much of its efforts are focused on the new YAKiT mobile app. But the company’s vision still remains the same: “Helping connect people and remove barriers to creativity, communication, and fun.”
