googlelogoscobleBack in May, Google CEO Larry Page hopped on his company’s first quarter earnings call and talked about using technology to improve life.

“There are so many opportunities to create technology that makes people’s lives better,” Page said in April. “We are still only at one percent of what’s possible and we are really just getting started.”

Which is why Google’s latest project makes sense, as the tech giant today announced a new company called Calico designed to help people become more healthy.

Calico will be run by Art Levinson, chairman of both Apple’s and Genentech’s boards. Google didn’t revealed many more details about the project and what types of products or services may come out of it.

“Illness and aging affect all our families,” Page said in a statement. “With some longer term, moonshot thinking around healthcare and biotechnology, I believe we can improve millions of lives.”

In a blog post today, Page reminded investors not to be surprised with ventures that “seem strange or speculative compared with our existing Internet businesses,” while adding that investments like Calico, Google Glass or Internet-producing solar-powered balloons are small compared to Google’s core products like search and Android.

TIME has a great in-depth story on why Page and Google started Calico and how they plan to run it.
