The Elite Eight.
The Elite Eight.

Editor’s Note: Geek Madness is our quest to find the greatest geek of all time. Voting takes place on our Facebook page

And then there were eight.

We’ve arrived at the Elite Eight of Geek Madness and there are eight serious geeks remaining: Bill Gates, Alan Turing, Linus Torvalds and Tim Berners-Lee from the technology bracket; Albert Einstein, Isaac Newton, Leonardo da Vinci and Nikola Tesla from the math/science side.

Let’s quickly recap the final four Sweet 16 matchups that took place this past weekend:

No. 1 Albert Einstein 48

No. 8 Galileo, 37

Einstein had his closet match yet against Galileo, known as the “Father of Modern Science.” But he just didn’t have enough steam to get past the one-and-only Einstein.

No. 2 Nikola Tesla, 62

No. 7 Charles Darwin, 17

Tesla entered the Madness as a championship contender and it certainly showed against Darwin.

No. 3 Leonardo da Vinci, 60

No. 6 Marie Curie, 20

Curie had an impressive win against Gregor Mendel in the first round, but da Vinci was just too much for the first female Nobel Prize winner.

No. 5 Isaac Newton, 58

No. 4 Archimedes, 18

Archimedes is considered to be one of the greatest mathematicians of all time, but Newton developed the principals of modern physics. Science trumped math in this one.

Now, let’s preview the final eight games. We’ll kick off voting today on our Facebook page, so make sure you get your votes in.

TECHNOLOGY

No. 1 Bill Gates vs. No. 5 Alan Turing

Bill G., the hometown favorite, has been rolling right along thus far in Geek Madness. But he’ll face his toughest challenge yet against Turing, who’s known as the father of computer science.

No. 2 Tim Berners-Lee vs. No. 14 Linus Torvalds

Torvalds is by and large our Geek Madness Cinderella. He upended Steve Jobs in the first round and recently took down Elon Musk. Will he do it again against the man who created the World Wide Web?

MATH/SCIENCE

No. 1 Albert Einstein vs. No. 5 Isaac Newton

Onlookers were predicting this Elite Eight matchup and by golly, here we are. It’s Einstein vs. Newton in an epic battle between two of the earth’s greatest scientists ever.

No. 2 Nicola Tesla vs. No. 3 Leonardo da Vinci

Another fantastic match to round out the bracket. Several have already pinned Tesla as the greatest geek of all time, but da Vinci was an Italian legend and arguably one of the most-talented people to graze the earth. Who you got?
