IMG_1185Forget about asking your server for a recommendation. The next time you walk into a restaurant, your iPhone may tell you which dishes other diners prefer, thanks to a new Foursquare update.

Almost a month after the geolocation company rolled the capability out to Android, select iOS users will be getting push recommendations for places they visit thanks to a new update to the company’s app today. In addition, when you head to a new city, Foursquare will give you recommendations for places you might want to check out.

It’s part of the company’s pivot away from simply being a check-in app and towards incorporating recommendations into its platform, as it moves to compete with review sites like Yelp and Urbanspoon.

The new capability represents something of a competitive advantage for Foursquare. While review sites are great for advance planning, sometimes you just have to call a Hail Mary and wander into that Thai place down the street. Having your phone tell you that people rave about the Tom Kha when you walk in is something that right now, only Foursquare is doing.

The Foursquare app for iPhone is available on the App Store if you want to pick it up.
