Facebook exceeded 1.1 billion monthly active users in the first quarter, a new milestone for the company. The social network saw its biggest growth in Asia and other parts of the world outside of the U.S., Canada and Europe.

The company also continued to see a steady increase in mobile usage, reporting 751 million mobile monthly active users, up from 488 million in the same quarter a year ago, and 680 million in the fourth quarter of 2012.

The numbers were release as part of Facebook’s earnings report for the first quarter. Facebook posted revenue of $1.46 billion for its first quarter, an increase of 38 percent and ahead of Wall Street’s expectations. Earnings of 12 cents per share fell just short of the advance consensus among financial analysts.

Facebook’s advertising revenue was $1.25 billion, with 30 percent of that coming from mobile ads. (That’s up from the fourth quarter, when mobile represented 23 percent of advertising revenue.)

“We’ve made a lot of progress in the first few months of the year,” said Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg in the earnings news release. “We have seen strong growth and engagement across our community and launched several exciting products.”

Despite the company’s growth in mobile, its Facebook Home interface for Android stumbled out of the gate. Expect lots of questions about that and the company’s mobile revenue strategy in general during the company’s conference call with analysts, which begins at 2 p.m. Pacific, available for streaming via the Facebook investor relations page.
