Exo Labs, the Seattle startup that developed a microscope camera that can link to your iPad, just raised another $1.25 million in fresh cash to close a series A round and bring total funding up to $2 million for the company.
Exo Labs is all about connecting your iPad to a microscope for a more interactive scientific viewing experience. There are similar devices in the market but they use the built-in camera on iPhones to look through eyepieces.
“This makes it very difficult to interact with what you are viewing and also causes optical distortion since the lenses built into iOS devices are not optimized for this kind of use,” co-founder and CEO Michael Baum said.
Baum told us that the new money, which comes from “mostly local angel investors,” will be used to push sales and marketing. Exo Labs is also working on new products both in the hardware and software realm, Baum said.
The company also just completed a successful Kickstarter campaign to put its product in the hands of students and teachers at no cost to them. Those cameras are being shipped to schools now.
In just the last couple of months, Exo Labs has added 50 more customers ranging from the education to engineering industries and now has upwards of 100 customers since debuting its product in April.
“We’ve come a long way and learned a lot,” Baum said. “We’re happy that everybody is excited and happy as we are about the product.”
Exo Labs currently has eight full-timers and works out of its office in the Northwest Work Lofts in downtown Seattle.
