blueroosterBlue Rooster, an interactive design firm based in Seattle, has raised $3 million in a Series A round from PFU Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of Fujitsu.

The company, founded in 2000, builds intranet solutions and web-based apps that help dozens of Fortune 500 customers. This is the first time Blue Rooster has taken outside funding and it is part of a larger investment yet to be completed.

PFU Limited has actually been a customer of Blue Rooster since 2010, receiving app and UX support from the Seattle company. After a big project was completed, PFU seemed to like what Blue Rooster was doing and “really wanted a seat at the table,” as CEO Kevin Conroy put it.

“It’s very flattering when a customer turns out to be a partner,” Conroy told GeekWire.

PFU will remain a customer of Blue Rooster, a 65-person company in Seattle’s North Lake Union neighborhood. The agency specializes in helping enterprise customers with Microsoft SharePoint implementation, and also does interactive work with web and mobile apps.

Blue Rooster also announced today that it will be opening up offices in both Hong Kong and New York City. Conroy said that his company has been doing a lot of work in the Asia-Pacific region and decided it was the right time to have a physical presence in the area.

As a result, Conroy expects headcount to grow to 100 by the middle of 2014. Blue Rooster is also bringing on Todd Ray, a former strategy consulting Microsoft vet. He’ll join Blue Rooster as Executive Vice President of Strategy.

Conroy, who is the sole founder and has bootstrapped the company from its inception 13 years ago, is excited to grow his workforce.

“It’s an amazing business, and a pretty damn fun environment,” he said. “We have the edginess of being a startup, but the profitability of being around for long time. It lets us do fun things.”
