cyanogenmod1Cyanogen today released a CyanogenMod Installer in the Google Play Store to help ease the process of installing the company’s customized Android OS.

Cyanogen, founded in Seattle, recently raised $7.3 million from Benchmark and Redpoint Ventures. Its software gives Android owners a more customizable and speedy experience than the standard OS that comes on Android smartphones out of the box. Cyanogen works with most Nexus and Samsung Galaxy devices, as well as the HTC One.

Before today, it was difficult to install Cyanogen’s software onto your phone. Now, though, the Installer app simplifies the process down and should allow more users to try out the OS. You’ll also need to download a Windows PC client application that pairs with the Installer app.

With its fresh funding and more the eight millions users, CyanogenMod seems to be gunning for third place in the mobile operating system space. Android and iOS are clearly the two frontrunners, but third has been somewhat up for grabs — though today’s IDC report shows Windows holding steady there.

CyanogenMod already has a partnership in the works with one OEM. It will be interesting to see if it catches on with mainstream users, especially given the new Installer app.

CyanogenMod’s 17 employees are split between two offices in Seattle and Palo Alto. The company conducted a Reddit AMA last month answering various questions regarding OEM partnerships, monetization plans and building its own hardware.
