kickstarterFollowing its launch in the United Kingdom late last year, one of the world’s most popular crowdfunding platforms is coming to Canada.

Kickstarter, the wildly popular crowdfunding platform, will be available in Canada starting September 9.

According to the company’s blog post about its upcoming launch, all pledges for Canadian projects will be made in Canadian Dollars, and backers in America or Britain will be able to see a conversion from their local currency into CAD before making a pledge.

For Canadians who are itching to get started, it’s possible to start building a project in Kickstarter’s project creator, prior to the September launch date.

In addition, Kickstarter will be hosting workshops for Canadian creators over the coming month to help them prepare to launch a project. Currently, there are only workshops scheduled in Toronto and Montreal (close to Kickstarter’s home base in New York), but Kickstarter has a system in place for Canadian creators to request meetups closer to them.

Continued international expansion is important for Kickstarter if it wants to continue to grow its business. Indiegogo, Kickstarter’s closest rival, currently serves 200 countries, and works in four different currencies, including Canadian dollars.
