consolewarsJust as a New York City man set an insane new world record today for video game collection, our own gaming competition continues to roll along in our quest to find the greatest console of all time.

Geek Madness: Console Wars is down to the final 12 consoles, with the final four Sweet 16 matchups getting underway today. You can vote below for the current round.

Let’s quickly recap the first four Sweet 16 games here:

Nintendo 64 — 74%; GameCube — 26%

In a battle of Nintendo titans, the classic 64 and its unique controller won out against the Cube.

PlayStation — 62%; Sega Dreamcast — 38%

In the closest match from last week, the original PlayStation took down Sega’s short-lived Dreamcast, which defeated the original Xbox in its previous meeting.

Super NES — 83%; Atari 7800 — 17%

Huge blowout here, as the Super NES breezed along to the Elite Eight with a win over the Atari 7800.

GameBoy — 76%; ColecoVision — 24%

Somewhat of a surprise on this one, as my colleague Todd Bishop’s champion pick was eliminated by Nintendo’s iconic handheld device.

And now for this week’s matchups. A big thanks to Geek Madness: Console Wars sponsor Nytec for helping to make this feature possible.

NES vs. Intellivision

We’ve got a great battle here between the famous NES and the classic Intellivision. While the NES is certainly the favorite, selling nearly 62 million consoles, it will have its hands full against the 16-bit Intelllivision console.

Atari 2600 vs. Atari 5200

It’s an all-Atari matchup here, with the 2600 coming in as a heavy favorite in a battle with its successor, the 5200.

Xbox 360 vs. Nintendo Wii

Moving on to the Modern Gen side of the bracket, we’ve got an excellent game between the Xbox 360 and Nintendo Wii. Nintendo’s Wii shook up the game industry with its motion-sensing Wii Remote, while the 360 introduced Xbox Live and Kinect sensor.

PlayStation 2 vs. Nintendo DS

Tough to predict who will come out on top for this match between two gaming kingpins. Sony’s PS2 is the best-selling console of all time at 155 million, while the DS is just behind in second place at 154 million.
