applesurfaceipadBy now, we’ve all seen those Surface ads. You know, the ones that involve Siri talking to a silent, but more capable Surface as a disembodied hand shows off its features.

Now, it looks like Apple might be angling to fight back.

According to a blog post by former Apple employee Jamie Ryan, Apple might announce its own keyboard cover as a part of its media event tomorrow. He said that the company has been testing a number of designs internally, including a cover that would replicate the functionality of Microsoft’s Touch Cover for the iPad. In the past, Apple has been happy to mostly cede iPad keyboards to third-party vendors like Logitech and Zagg, though its Bluetooth keyboard works well with the iPad.

Incidentally, Apple’s event will be taking place on the same day as Microsoft’s Surface 2 launch, which would make it seem like tomorrow would be the perfect time for the company to strike at Microsoft’s own tablet.

Ryan was very clear to stress that there’s no guarantee any of the designs will ever see the light of day, and that it’s entirely possible some or all of them will be kept inside Apple’s Cupertino headquarters in perpetuity. But, Apple does hold a number of patents for keyboard cover designs, so it’s not that far off.
