Sometimes the most effective apps are the simplest. This week’s App of the Week, “Where You @?” is a quick and easy way for someone you know to find out where you are, just by texting two characters — @? — to your Android device.
The app responds automatically to the person making the query with a link to a map showing your location.
What about privacy? The app only responds to people who are in your Android contact list.
The app was developed OTTER LLC, a company based on Bainbridge Island, Wash. It’s an outgrowth of OTTER’s larger focus on safe-driving apps. The “Where You @?” app is designed with families in mind, and particularly teens whose parents will be able to text them to automatically find out their location.
Or you can try it with your co-workers, like we’ve been doing here at GeekWire. I had Taylor Soper install this app on his Galaxy S3 so we could test “Where You @” around the office. He hasn’t uninstalled it yet, but for some reason he keeps randomly turning off the GPS on his phone.
“Where You @” is a free download for Android. The person making the text-based query can be using any type of smartphone.
