Microsoft recently announced that the Windows Phone more than doubled the size of its app catalog in 2012, adding more than 75,000 new apps and games from third-party developers.
That’s nothing compared to Apple’s latest app stats released today.
Apple announced that there have been over 40 billion apps downloaded, with almost 20 billion just in 2012. Last month was record-breaking with more than two billion downloads in December alone. The App Store now has over 500 million active accounts and more than 775,000 apps for iOS devices.
“It has been an incredible year for the iOS developer community,” said Eddy Cue, Apple’s senior vice president of Internet Software and Services. “Developers have made over seven billion dollars on the App Store, and we continue to invest in providing them with the best ecosystem so they can create the most innovative apps in the world.”
The 40 billion number does not include re-downloads and updates. Google Play, meanwhile, has recorded over 25 billion app downloads and could reach one million apps by June.
Flurry reported that during the week of Dec. 25 — Dec. 31, a record-breaking 1.76 billion applications were downloaded to Android and iOS devices.
