Android has hit a milestone, with Google’s mobile operating system officially topping the 1 billion activations mark. To celebrate, the company announced its next named release of the Android operating system: Android 4.4, code named “KitKat.”
There’s no word yet as to what changes to the OS will be coming with “KitKat,” which would appear to be following quickly on the heels of Android 4.3, which was announced at Google’s I/O conference this summer. Google’s site only says that “It’s our goal with Android KitKat to make an amazing Android experience available for everybody.”
There’s one thing we do know: Nestlé and Google are teaming up to pull off a sweet promotion surrounding the name. If you buy a Kit Kat bar specially marked with some Android branding, you’ll have a chance to win a Nexus 7 tablet or some credit for the Google Play store.
The new name comes as Apple just announced that it will be holding a press event next week. While there’s no official word on what will be announced there, the rumor mill points to a pair of new iPhone models.
