amazongamesIf a new rumor is true, Amazon may be getting into the console business by the end of this year.

According to a report by GameInformer, Amazon is rumored to be developing an Android-powered game console for release in late 2013, in time for the holiday shopping season, complete with its own dedicated controller.

Following the GameInformer report, GamesBeat said that it heard a similar rumor about the console, though some of its sources were unsure whether or not it was actually going to launch.

Amazon has expanded into gaming in recent months, setting up a game studio last summer and releasing a Facebook game.

While all we have to go on right now are rumblings, an Amazon console would be in direct competition with the Ouya, a $99 Kickstarter darling that launched to mediocre reviews, as well as the Shield, Nvidia’s new microconsole. Neither of those seem to have really taken off yet, though the holidays may prove good for sales.
